Is the Westin Maui Worth It for Families? My Full Review

Westin Maui Resort & Spa

Westin Maui Resort & Spa July 2026

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa is one of my favorite Ka'anapali options for the right family.

It's big. It's lively. It has six pools, a 270-foot waterslide, beach access, family activities, dining on property, and an easy walk to Whalers Village.

But I don't recommend it to everyone.

I toured and stayed at the resort in July 2026, and this guide covers the things I pay attention to when deciding whether the Westin is actually the right fit for a client.

I especially like this resort for…

  • Families with younger kids who want an easy, activity filled resort

  • Kids who could happily spend most of the day at the pool

  • First time Hawaii families who want convenience

  • Multigenerational families who need something for several age groups

  • Families who want restaurants, beach, activities and entertainment close

  • Parents who want some actual downtime on vacation

One of my favorite memories here was sitting in the pool while my son Drew spent hours going down the slides and making new friends. I wasn't coordinating the next activity. I wasn't entertaining him every 5 minutes. I was sitting in the water with a drink (it was my birthday), watching him have the time of his life and talking with other parents. That is one of the biggest reasons I recommend this resort to families. It can give the kids a vacation they love without making the parents work harder than they do at home. There are so many kids and activities to keep them entertained on your slow resort days.

The Westin is not the resort I'd choose first if you want…

  • A quiet boutique atmosphere

  • A romantic adults only feel

  • A very private pool experience

  • A condo style stay with a full kitchen

  • A small, peaceful property

  • A honeymoon style escape

This is a large, energetic family resort. That is exactly why some families love it and exactly why I would choose something different for other travelers.

The pool situation: one of the biggest reasons families book here

The Westin's Kawaiola aquatic area is huge, 87,000 square feet with six pools spread across the oceanfront, a 270 foot signature water slide, and an adults only pool with hot tubs.

  • The 270-foot slide — the star for kids. The thing they beg to do on repeat.

  • Splash area for little ones — shallow, safe, and designed for the smallest keiki.

  • Swim-through grotto — twin waterfalls and a hidden whirlpool tucked behind the falls.
  • Hot tubs — scattered around the pool deck for when the adults need a minute.
  • Adults-only pool area — a separate, quieter area for grandparents or parents who need a break.

  • No lazy river — if a lazy river is a must have, tell me before you book; I may steer you toward a different resort.

Kristin's tip: If pool chair location matters to you, especially during busy travel periods, plan to claim your preferred area early. Cabanas can also book quickly. You can book these early!

Which rooms are actually worth the upgrade?

I wouldn't overthink every room category at the Westin Maui. For most families, the bigger question is whether to upgrade to Hokupa'a Club or a suite.

The Lanai

Is Hokupa'a Club worth it?

Hokupa'a is the Westin's more elevated experience, including access to The Lanai at Hokupa'a, an exclusive space for guests staying in this tower.

I think it can be worth the upgrade if:

  • You want a more elevated, exclusive feel within a large family resort

  • You'll actually use the club level amenities

  • Convenience matters to you
  • You want the Westin experience with a little more breathing room and polish
  • You're celebrating something special and want the trip to feel upgraded

If your budget allows and you value convenience and a more premium experience, Hokupa'a is one of the upgrades I'd seriously consider. But if your family plans to spend every waking minute at the pool, beach and exploring Maui, I may tell you to put that money somewhere else.

Suites: when they're worth it

Suites make the most sense when space actually changes the quality of your vacation. I especially consider them for:

  • Larger families
  • Multigenerational trips
  • Families who need more separation at bedtime
  • Longer stays
  • Travelers who know everyone being in one standard room will get old very quickly

Don't upgrade to a suite just because it sounds luxurious. Upgrade when the extra space will make your family noticeably more comfortable. For some families, that's absolutely worth the money. For others, I'd rather put the budget toward experiences, a better view, or additional nights in Hawaii.

This is one of the things I help clients decide. Sometimes I'll tell you Hokupa'a is absolutely worth it. Sometimes I'll tell you to save the money. And sometimes a suite is the difference between everyone enjoying the vacation and everyone needing a vacation from each other by day three. The right choice depends on your family, your budget and how you actually travel.

Important: The Westin does have connecting room options in several categories. However, connecting rooms are requests, not guarantees at the time of booking. This matters enormously for families. It is also exactly the kind of detail I flag directly with the resort and follow up on again before my clients arrive. If your vacation only works if two rooms connect, that is something I want to know before we choose your room strategy. You can pay in advance $50 per night per room to guarantee a connecting room.

What families should know about kids club and resort activities

The Westin offers kids programming through its Discovery Room as well as resort activities throughout the week. Activities may include cultural experiences, crafts, hula, games and other family programming. They also have a game room the older kids would enjoy.

Programming, ages, pricing and schedules can change, so I always recommend confirming the current details for your dates rather than planning around old information online. If this is important for your trip, I can help verify it.

Beach at Westin Maui Resort and Spa

Ka'anapali Beach

The beach: what families should know

The resort sits directly on Ka'anapali Beach. You'll have easy access to the sand, snorkeling opportunities nearby, and Black Rock is a short walk up the beach.

For families with very young children, though, remember: Ka'anapali is an ocean beach. Conditions can vary based on season and swell. If you're traveling with toddlers or hesitant swimmers, this is something I'd factor into the resort decision instead of assuming every Maui beach behaves the same way.

Location: one of the Westin's strongest advantages

You can walk from the resort to Whalers Village for additional shopping and dining. That makes the property especially convenient for families who don't want to get in a car every time someone wants dinner, dessert or something different to do.

Restaurants, shopping, and entertainment are within walking distance which means fewer car rides and more flexibility for families with kids. For some clients, that walkability becomes one of the deciding factors. You can also order an Uber easily and it's super quick and convenient.

So… would I book it for your family? Possibly.

For the right family, it can be fantastic. But before I recommend it, I usually want to know:

  • Who is traveling?
  • How old are the kids?
  • What is your approximate budget?
  • Is the beach or pool more important?

  • Do you want high energy or peaceful?

  • How important is walkability?
  • Do you need connecting rooms?
  • Are you planning mostly resort days or exploring Maui?
  • Is this your first trip to Hawaii?
  • What would make the vacation feel "worth it" to you?

Those answers can completely change which Maui resort I recommend.

A hotel booking site can show you available rooms. It can't tell you whether I'd actually choose that resort for your family.

I've personally walked this property, stayed here, spent time at the pools, explored the rooms and resort areas, and seen how families actually use it.

I also have direct resort relationships and access to amenities, perks and, depending on dates and availability, special rates that may not appear on standard booking sites.

Already thinking about Maui? Send me your dates, who's traveling and what matters most to you, I'll tell you whether I think the Westin is a strong fit, or whether I'd put you somewhere else.
